Bad breath is a common but embarrassing problem. Sometimes, one may not even be aware that they are suffering from bad breath; and those who realize they have an issue often rely on over-the-counter products such as mouth rinses, toothpaste and even chewing gum to mask or temporarily resolve their bad breath issues. Sometimes, bad breath is caused by bacteria that have become trapped in the mouth, and in other cases, it may indicate a more serious underlying problem.
Some of the most common causes of bad breath are:
- Gum Disease. Lack of proper oral hygiene and periodontal disease can be a primary cause of halitosis. Our office offers comprehensive treatment for gum disease such as scaling and root planing, root surface debridement and even surgical measures such as gingivectomy.
- Systemic diseases and certain medications. Several illnesses and the use of certain medicines can cause chronic bad breath.
- Dry mouth (xerostomia): Saliva helps moisten and cleanse your mouth. Dead cells tend to accumulate on the cheeks, gums and tongue of people suffering from dry mouth. The decomposition of these cells produces an odor. Certain medications, smoking, and issues with your salivary glands can lead to xerostomia.
- Tobacco products. Smoking dries out your mouth and causes a bad mouth odor. Tobacco users are also more likely to have gum disease which can become an added cause of bad breath.
In most cases, a professional dental cleaning can help you get rid of bad breath. If gum disease is the root of your halitosis, we will perform a deeper oral cleaning known as scaling and root planing. Once the treatment is over, it is extremely important for you to maintain proper oral hygiene to avoid the recurrence of chronic bad breath.
